A humble beginning, a history of IT excellence

Our History

From a small, three-man operation to an award-winning, 100+ strong workforce, Mirus has a history of success, hard work and IT excellence.

Our History

From humble beginnings, the vision of our founder and his two colleagues has grown beyond their early dreams for this IT business. Today, Mirus IT employees 111 people and is part of the global technology company with people at its heart, Advania.

Here’s how it all began.

Mirus IT’s early days

2002: Mirus IT founded

At a time when most of us were still using dial up internet connections, our founder Paul Tomlinson set up Mirus IT. It was the year that broadband was being introduced, LinkedIn launched and the so-called ‘dot com bubble’ burst.

Having worked as an IT engineer since the age of 16, Paul was well versed in IT services. He employed two fellow IT professionals and started to grow his new business, Mirus IT.

2006: Mirus IT grew from 3 to 10 employees

In this year, BT launched its brand new broadband division – BT Openreach, and Mirus IT gained new business and new team members. Excitingly, it was the first year that our turnover hit £1 million.

As Mirus IT continued to grow, new premises were needed. In 2007, we doubled our office size in Drakes Mews. The following year, we acquired JMD Systems. By 2009, 25 people worked here.

The 2010s: award-winning managed service providers

As the internet became part of our essential daily lives, we started streaming our entertainment and discussing it all on social media. Broadband connectivity improved hugely which was transformative for businesses.

Our CEO, Paul, envisioned Mirus IT as one of the most trusted managed service providers around. And that’s what we became. In the mid-2010s we were made the top 25% Global Managed Service Providers by MSPmentor, one of the most distinguished lists in the industry. We achieved Investors in People (people have always been, and always will be, at the heart of all we do). We won Microscope MSP of the Year, Kaseya Large MSP of the Year and Datto EMEA Partner of the Year.

To achieve our vision, and to propel our business forward, we acquired further businesses. In 2010, it was MK IT Solutions and in 2017 2r Systems joined us.

We doubled our office size in Linford Wood and opened our London office in 2012 (the year of the London Olympics). We grew our team from 50 employees in 2011, to 75 in 2013. Our turnover hit £5 million in 2011 and an incredible £10.5 million in 2018. 2018 was significant for another reason – we started our ongoing partnership with Northampton Saints.

Importantly, our service provision expanded too. Mirus Telephony launched in 2011. Mirus became a Datto Elite Partnership in 2015 and won Datto EMEA Partner of the Year the following year.

In 2019, Paul Tomlinson left Mirus IT. It was a transformative time for us, as we were acquired by IT Lab.

The 2020s: strategic local and global partnerships

Along came the momentous years of the pandemic and businesses needed to get employees working from home. Mirus IT was there to help.

IT Lab becomes Content + Cloud in 2020 and achieved £15 million in turnover. Then in 2021, we joined the Advania group of companies. We continued to retain our Mirus IT identity and to support local small to midsized businesses, all with the backing of Advania – the most awarded Microsoft partner in the UK.

In our 20th year of operation, we created a 24/7 service desk in South Africa to enable our round the clock customer support.

Today, we have 111 people working at Mirus IT. We’ve helped over 250 companies to elevate their technology to the next level. And we stay true to our original ethos – to provide professional IT support with a personal touch.
